José de Sousa Saramago passed away

“Who reads the Bible, looses the faith”

From a Locksmith to a Nobel prize winner

To the question why is he seeing the world so pessimistic, José Saramago answered that he is too well informed to be an optimist. On the other hand he was convinced, that human beings need a vision so that they don’t consider the course of time to be unalterable.

Saramago was born on 16th November 1922, as the son of a farmer – family in Azinhaga. Azinhaga is situated in the central district of Ribatejo, approxmately 120 km northeast from Lisbon. When he was two years old, his family moved to the Portuguese capital. Due to lack of money he had to stop the High School. He changed over to the technical college, where he finished his apprenticeship as a locksmith. He started to write poems, became a journalist and in 1969 he joined the forbidden communist party.

In his books he mainly was concerned about the poor people’s destiny. Like this, with his literature he became the lawyer of a whole class. In 1947 he published his first novel Tierra de pecado*. Only in 1966 his second work followed Poemas posibles*, which was reprinted in 2006. Saramago had to become 60 years old before his novel Baltasar and Blimunda 1982 brought him worldwide fame. His most convincing novel is Blindness. It is about the will power of minority for which one is not always oneself responsible, a central subject of Saramago. His most controversial novel is The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, published in 1991 and cause for scandal in his native country Portugal, but especially at the Vatican, as it was considered blasphemous. After a culturally-politically argument with the Portugese Government, the confessed atheist and communist left his home country and moved with his third wife, the journalist Pilar del Río, to Lanzarote. In the past years he published remarkable books Cuadernos de Lanzarote (2001)*, Das Zentrum (2002)*, a novel against the globalization and Kleine Erinnerungen (2009)*. Saramago remained until his death up to the mark of the times he lived. He was a member of the Attac movement, wrote in their central organ Le Monde Diplomatique and in his blog: www.josesaramago.org

In 1982 he received the Pen Club Portugal Prize for his novel Baltasar and Blimunda, and repeated this with his novel Year of the death of Ricardo Reis. He was Doctor Honoris Causa of not less than 14 universities (Manchester, Turin, Evora, Buenos Aires, Autónoma del Estado de México, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Sevilla, Castilla-La Mancha, Politécnica de Valencia, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Salamanca, Granada y Carlos III de Madrid). In 1998 he was awarded with the Nobel prize for Literature for his work.

The Portuguese author José Saramago passed away last Friday in the age of 87 years after a longer illness, in his townhouse in Tías.

His last work was Cain, which was published in 2009. It is his last settle up with the Christian faith and with those people who invented Cain: “Sometimes I say, who reads the Bible looses the faith. I call the Bible a manual of bad habits and the worse of human nature.”
